Hello beautiful humans! Today, we are going to talk about the basics of an oracle deck. I love oracle decks because there really are no rules. Every deck is so unique in its own way. The creator of the cards gets to pick whatever theme they want, if any, the number of cards, the images, etc. I prefer oracle decks over tarot because I feel like they bring out my intuitive nature. There are hundreds of texts available on tarot, while for an oracle deck, you usually only get the booklet that comes with it. This leaves so much room for interpretation and creativity. All of this being said, let’s dive into the basics of what an oracle deck is and how to use one.
What is an oracle deck?
An oracle deck is a set of cards used in divination. As previously stated, an oracle deck has no set regulations. The number of cards, images on the cards, meaning of the cards, and theme of the cards is decided by the creator(s). Oracle decks tend to come with a booklet on how to use them. This booklet will include an introduction, the creator’s interpretation of each card, and suggested spreads. Often decks will have a spread with an intended purpose/question; however, oracle decks can be used in the same way as the tarot to answer any question using any spread.
How do I use an oracle deck?
There are two routes you can take with this question. First, you can use the deck as the creator intended/suggested. Booklets will usually come with spreads that the creator found work best in their experience with their deck. With this route, the internet is also a valuable resource. Look up how other people have used oracle decks, and spreads they enjoy/work well for them. The second route, my route of choice, is do whatever feels right. Let your intuitive muscles get a workout and simply go with whatever your soul is telling you. Take my preferred deck for example. I will spread all of the cards out randomly, haphazardly make them into a deck, where one will tend to “jump out” or pop out. I can’t tell you why, but one card will always stick out or refuse to go in like the rest – and that is my card for the day. No book told me to do this, I simply just felt it, tried it, and it worked.
How do I choose a deck?
Wonderful question, go with your gut. There are people who will tell you to never buy a deck without feeling or seeing the cards in person. I am here to tell you that is hogwash. I have two oracle decks that I use, and my favorite is the one I ordered online. I have two tarot decks I rarely use and I saw them both in person, feeling the cards for one of them. I feel so connected to the deck I got from the internet, it’s wild. I had seen pictures of it on social media, fell in love immediately with it, and knew I had to have it. It was a gut feeling. If you are still struggling, go based on the artwork. You want to be aesthetically attracted to it and feel like the deck is beautiful. I will be honest, I especially do not like my first tarot deck because after I opened it for the first time and saw what the back of the cards looked like it was no longer appealing to me.
I hope you enjoyed this brief introduction to oracle decks! They are a wonderful way to get in touch with what your soul is trying to tell you. I always find my days flow better when I draw a card first thing in the morning and remember the messages being told to me for the day. Thank you, thank you, thank you for reading.
Love,
Cazmera
