Hello beautiful humans! As many of you know, I love to learn about different religions and spiritual paths. Today I want to talk about Wicca, because it is one of the paths I feel most connected to and I feel like most people do not know much about it. To give you a brief overview to my relationship with Wicca, I have read several books on it and have debated many times if I want to go on a solo practitioner’s journey through the year and a day initiation into the practice.
I am very attracted to the theology behind Wicca, which essentially is based around the Goddess and God and the earth’s cycles. I can see myself in the near future incorporating more Wiccan rituals into my life and spiritual path. All of that being said, up until two years ago Wicca scared me. I was raised in a heavily Christian-influenced environment, so all I knew about Wicca is that it went against God. I pictured blood sacrifices and evil. Knowing what I know now, my narrow-mindedness is laughable. So, let’s dive into some of the misconceptions I held about Wicca.
- Wicca has nothing to do with Satan.
I genuinely believed that Wiccans were witches who worshipped the devil. They wore all black and gathered in the middle of the night to make blood sacrifices to gain supernatural power. I was SO wrong. Wicca has nothing to do with the devil. Most wiccans don’t even believe in the devil, first of all. When you really look into it, they worship with same God Christians do, they just separate it into the God and Goddess, which came from one soul, aka the universal soul.
- Almost no wiccans do black magic.
Pretty much everyone has heard of the dark arts. Read Harry Potter or watch a witchy movie. I thought that all Wiccans were the same, believed the same thing, and therefore, all practiced black magic. Also, black magic to me was killing baby animals or slitting your wrists for power or something else of evil intention. This, again was SO wrong. For starters, there are so many different types of Wicca. You got your green wiccans, your kitchen witches, your hedge witches, your solitary wiccans, your Celtic witches and the list goes on and on. Also, not all wiccans consider themselves witches and vice versa. They are two entirely separate things. Crazy, right? Anyways, at its core, Wicca is an earth based religion. That being said, while some may gather in the woods in the middle of the night, it is probably to bask in the glory of the moon. If you are doing Wicca the way it is intended, I doubt you are shedding any blood over it.
- You do not have to be in a coven to be a wiccan.
This is probably going to get a lot of controversy, but this is what I and many other people will tell you. You do not have to be in a coven to be a wiccan. Wicca used to not be very accessible. You only knew about it if you were initiated in or knew someone who practiced. It is important to note, I am talking about the Wicca that was born in the 1900s. Again, remember that Wicca and witches are two very different things. The beliefs that Wicca holds has been around for thousands of years. At first when Wicca was “reborn” if you will, the circles were pretty strict; however, more modern wiccans believe that the information should be accessible to everyone. As I mentioned in the introduction, I have considered embarking on the year and a day initiation into the path. This would be available to me via a guidebook, as I would personally choose to be a solitary wiccan. Anyone, anywhere, can choose to become a wiccan.
